NATIONAL ARCHIVES OF INDIA 125 YEAR

INTRODUCTION

FollowiIn the year 2016 the National Archives of Indaia is celebrating the 125th anniversary of its foundation. Estiblished at Calcutta(now Kolkata) as the Imperial Records Deprtment on 11 March 1891, the National Archives of aIndia was transferred to Delhi following the transfer of capital in 1911, and from 1947 onwards came to be known as the National Archives of India.

Today the National Archives of India stands as the sentinel of the documentary heritage of the nation.  It is the largest archival repository in South Asia. Its valuable corpus of archival heritage includes;public records, oriental records, cartographic records, private papers of eminent personalities and microfilms, which constitute an invaluable source of information for the administrators, scholars and other users.

The National Archives of India is also the nodal agency for the implementation of the Public Records Act, 1993 and the Public Recoreds Rules, 1997 in the Ministries/Departments/Public Sector Undertaking etc. of the Central Government and Union Territories.

It is an attached office of the Ministry of Culture and has one Regional office at Bhopal and three Recordes at Bhubaneshwar, Jaipur and Puducherry.
