K. R. Puri succeeded Mr NC Sen Gupta as the 12th Governor of Reserve Bank of India. He was the Chairman and Managing Director of the life insurance corporation of India prior to being appointed the Governor of Reserve Bank. During his tenure the big 1000 Rupees notes were issued for the last time before demonetization in 1978. The State of Emergency in India coincided with his tenure. The twenty point economic program was introduced and a new money supply series introduced. The regional banks like State Bank of India, Syndicate bank and Punjab National Bank were set up to provide credit to the weaker sections of the society.
