S. Venkitaramanan succeeded RN Malhotra as the 18th Governor of the Reserve Bank of India. He holds a Master’s degree in Physics from the University of Kerala and also a Master’s degree in Industrial Administration from Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, USA. He is a member of Indian Administrative Service. Before becoming the Governor he served as Secretary of Finance for the Government of India from 1985 to 1989 and Adviser to the Government of Karnataka. India faced difficulties related to external sector during his tenure. His astute management saw the country tide overcome the balance of payment crisis. His term also saw India adopt the IMF’s stabilization program where the Rupee underwent devaluation and the launch of economic reforms. He also served as Chairman of Ashok Leyland Investment Services Ltd, Director of new Tirupur Area Development Corporation Ltd and BPL Telecom Ltd. He also served as Independent Director of Reliance Industries from 1997 to 2009.
