Dr Manmohan Singh succeeded as the 15th Governor of Reserve Bank of India. He served as Secretary Finance as well as Member Secretary of the planning Commission prior to his appointment as Governor. During his tenure, comprehensive legal reforms were carried out related to the banking sector, a new chapter was introduced on the Reserve Bank of India Act and the Urban Banks was set up. After his tenure in the Bank, he served in various capacities before being appointed the Finance Minister in 1991. His tenure as Finance Minister was notable for the fact that it heralded the liberalization and economic reforms in India. He was awarded Padma Vibhushan in 1987. He has been appointed as the Honorable Prime Minister of India in 2004.
