Dr. D Subbarao succeeded Y V Reddy as the 22nd Governor of the Reserve Bank of India. He graduated in Physics from IIT Kharagpur and received his Master’s in Physics from Kanpur. He topped the IAS examination in 1972. He later did Master’s in Economics from Ohio State University and received a Ph. D in Economics from Andhra University. He worked as Secretary to the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council, lead economist in the World Bank, Finance Secretary to Government of Andhra Pradesh and Joint Secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance. He has played a major role in initiation of fiscal reforms at state levels and also a study on decentralization in countries of East Asia. Star or replacement notes were issued in Rs.100 denomination for the first time in year 2009.
